Reader Update: Finally Receiving A Refund From Alitalia (Expedia) After ‘Error Fare’ Tickets Sold In December 2016

$
0
0

Back in December 2016 Alitalia has filed a fare with an incorrect pricing for routes between Germany/Italy and Asia/South Pacific on Alitalia ticket stock including flights on their partner Etihad.

The airline subsequently decided to cancel all the tickets and we still hear about many cases from readers who still haven’t gotten their money back to this day – one reader updated us this week that he was finally successful getting a refund.

Some readers were successful in claiming a credit card charge back but others were not or haven’t pursued it properly.

A most recent case was reported to us from our reader Jason who lives in the U.S. close to the Expedia HQ in Bellevue, WA and who contacted us via Facebook the a few weeks ago seeking advise as neither Expedia.

He sent us the first mail about six weeks ago:

As to many readers previously I suggested to consider legal action if all complaints to the DOT and Alitalia themselves were unsuccessful. Remember, John had also purchased two of these tickets and got them refunded after half a year of neglect on Alitalia’s side and finally involving the DOT (he wrote about it here).

Today Jason updated us that even though Alitalia continued to ignore him Expedia finally reacted and refunded him the money to his credit card after threatening to take them to Small Claims Court.

to be honest I’m very happy this worked out for Jason as we’re nearing a two year mark and the tickets weren’t cheap (I believe it was close to $700 per ticket sold). Taking legal action or doing a very last push and seriously threatening to do so is the only way to recover funds at this point.

One of the reasons why we at LoyaltyLobby have made the decision not to cover these ‘error fares’ is that nowadays they often come with a lot of baggage and problems for those who purchased them. This involves loss of time, loss of money, issues such as the ones here and many other things that don’t outweigh the benefit of publishing such fares. In the old days airlines were more generous and the amount of tickets sold was much lower.

Now as soon as the news about such a fare hits the internet thousands of tickets are being sold within hours and the airline often has no other choice than to cancel them especially if First Class inventory is concerned and their entire availability is gone for months. However if an airline cancels such a fare there is no excuse for not refunding the money immediately.

Conclusion

I’m glad that least one person finally got a refund that he is absolutely entitled to, even though I’m surprised Expedia did anything here. Alitalia and to a degree also the OTA’s that sold these tickets and took the payment are engaging in clearly fraudulent action here as they withhold the money of customers without providing a service or product.

Alitalia continues to be in the news for all the wrong reasons. Looming bankruptcy, strikes, spending money on new uniforms (priorities?), bad customer service and of course this ongoing error fare refund debacle. Does Alitalia still owe you money as well?

Le Club AccorHotels has new bonus miles promotion for Alitalia MilleMiglia program member stays both booked and consumed between July 18 – September 30, 2018.

Le Club AccorHotels Alitalia MilleMiglia Bonus Miles

MilleMiglia members can earn quadruple miles for stays in Italy and triple worldwide. Stays at Fairmont, Raffles and Swissotel brands are also included.

You can access this offer on Accor’s website here.

READ MORE: Le Club AccorHotels Rate & Bonus Points And Miles promotions

Note that you must have your Le Club AccorHotels earning preference set to partner points/miles and have Alitalia MilleMiglia set as the preferred partner to earn the bonus.

Conclusion

Quadruple miles is a good offer and probably better than to earn Le Club AccorHotels points outright IF vested in the Alitalia’s program (and the airline is going to be around).

Just be careful if you enable the autoconversion of points to miles and you have any points in your account. They will be swept without any bonus to MilleMiglia too.

Here are the terms and conditions of this promotion:

1. The Le Club AccorHotels terms and conditions apply to the Summer offer MilleMiglia and you must be a Le Club AccorHotels member to take advantage of the offer.

2. This offer entitles Le Club AccorHotels members, regardless of their status, to multiply by 4 their Rewards points on any stay in a Le Club AccorHotels loyalty programme participating hotel in Italy or to multiply by 3 their Rewards points on any stay in a Le Club AccorHotels loyalty programme participating hotel in the rest of the World. This Rewards points bonus is offered in addition to the Rewards points and Status points that are usually earned by the Le Club AccorHotels member on completing an eligible stay in accordance with the Le Club Accorhotels General Conditions of Use.

This promotion does not apply to stays in Le Club AccorHotels partner hotels.

The number of Rewards points earned via this offer are calculated based on the number of points earned by a member with Classic status.

In order to benefit from this offer, the member must have activated MilleMiglia Program as their preferred automatic conversion option ahead of the stay. This option should remain activated until the member receives the points (Rewards points and Status points) related to his/her stay on his/her Le Club AccorHotels membership account.

3. This offer is valid for all stays in a participating hotel worldwide (including Fairmont, Raffles and Swisshotels properties) completed by a member from 18/07/2018 to 30/09/2018, and booked between 18/07/2018 and 30/09/2018.

4. The stay must be for a minimum of 1 night.

5. All consecutive stays (check-out and subsequent check-in on the same day) in the same hotel will count as a single stay. The Summer offer MilleMiglia only applies once to each stay.

6. For the purposes of this offer, a stay is understood to be one (1) booking made by a Le Club AccorHotels member for one or several rooms in a participating hotel. In other words, bookings that include more than one (1) room will count as just one (1) stay.

7. To take advantage of this offer, your booking must be made via AccorHotels.com, our participating brands’ websites and apps, or the AccorHotels Call Centres. Bookings made via any other channel will not be eligible to benefit from this offer.

8. You must provide your Le Club AccorHotels membership card number when making your booking, and present your card at the hotel reception desk when checking-in for your stay.

9. The Le Club AccorHotels Rewards points bonus will be credited to your account within 10 days of checking-out and then converted to MilleMiglia Miles within 6 weeks according to applicable conversion rule.

10. This offer cannot be combined with other current offers or promotional benefits and does not apply to groups.

If the stay meets the terms and conditions for several offers, only the Rewards points linked to the most generous offer (meaning that allows you to earn the highest number of Rewards points) will be credited to your account.

11. Any stay partly or entirely paid with Le Club AccorHotels Rewards points will not be eligible to receive this offer, nor will they count towards offers requiring multiple stays to earn points.

12. This offer is subject to availability. Terms and Conditions of Sale apply to the public booking rates specific to each hotel.

13. Please specify the reference OWM009163 in all your communications with AccorHotels call centers or the Customer Care team related to this offer.

Delta & Easyjet Preparing For A Combined Alitalia Bid?

$
0
0

Alitalia, Rome based SkyTeam member airline that filed for bankruptcy in May 2017, has been looking for a new owner for close to two years.

Alitalia Running Out Of Cash

There were reports over the weekend that Air France-KLM had not submitted their bid after a spat between the French and Italian governments. Delta is now looking to invest in the “new” airline with Easyjet.

Here’s an excerpt from Corriere (access their piece here):

An Alitalia with two operating centers (Fiumicino, Malpensa), a strategic direction (in Rome), a fleet with a hundred aircraft and personnel with a new contract, less onerous.

The “new Alitalia” of FS-Delta-easyJet would have two operational bases: Rome Fiumicino, under the management of the Americans, would deal with the long haul, North America and feeder. Milan Malpensa, led by easyJet (which also has its largest base in the country in the Lombard airport), would guarantee connectivity in Northern Italy, would keep current intercontinental routes (New York, Tokyo), but a third of the sections “because overlapping to those of low cost ».

Conclusion

Not sure why any airline would like to invest a penny into Alitalia after the billions burned by Etihad trying to get the airline properly running.

An Italian railway company is looking for the investors but perhaps they ended up being the majority owner of the money losing airline in this national “project”? Shouldn’t sick companies be allowed to collapse rather than burning more taxpayer money trying to rescue them for the umpteenth time?

There are more questions than answers. Cannot believe that this saga with the Alitalia has been going on for such a long time. The Italian government has used more than 7 billion euros to keep Alitalia flying over the past decade or so before this latest bankruptcy.

Aviation Sector Strike In Italy On May 21, 2019 (Alitalia Cancels Half Of The Flights)

$

Aviation sector employees in Italy will be on  strike tomorrow (Tuesday) May 21, 2019 that will affect air traffic to/from and around the country.

Alitalia Running Out Of Cash

Alitalia has already canceled half of the scheduled flights for the day and some Monday evening and Wednesday morning flights too. The airline is trying to operate the Tuesday morning (7AM – 10AM) and evening (6PM – 9PM) flights. This strike will affect flights on all airlines.

You can access Alitalia’s page for the strike here.

Here’s the announcement from Alitalia:

Due to a 24-hour air transport sector strike confirmed by some Italian trade unions for Tuesday 21 May, Alitalia was forced to cancel half of its flights scheduled for that day, as well as some flights scheduled for the late evening of 20 May and the early morning of 22 May.

Flights set to operate on 21 May during the peak times between 7 am to 10 am and from 6 pm to 9 pm will operate as scheduled.

List of cancelled flights is available here.

Alitalia has taken special measures to mitigate customer inconvenience by operating bigger aircraft on domestic and international routes, in order to rebook passengers affected by cancellations onto the first available flights on the same day: 60 per cent of involved travelers will fly on the same 21 May 2019.

Alitalia invites all customers already holding tickets for travels on 21 May, as well as on the late evening of 20 May and the early morning of 22 May, to check the status of their flights before going to the airport on Alitalia.com website, or calling the airline at the toll-free number 800.65.00.55 (within Italy), at +39 06.65649 (from overseas), or contacting the travel agency where the ticket was bought.

Travelers affected by cancellation or schedule change of Alitalia flights from the late evening of 20 May to the early morning of 22 May can rebook their travel at no additional cost or penalty, or ask for a full ticket refund (only if the flight is cancelled or the delay on departure exceeds 5 hours) by May 28, 2019.

Conclusion

Alitalia will upgrade the equipment on some of the flight and thus expects to be able to get 60% of ticketed passengers to their destinations despite of the strike.

Remember that Alitalia is required by the EC 261/2004 law to rebook affected passengers to their final destination at the earliest opportunity even if it means sending them to airlines such as BA or Emirates. This work best for those that merely transit in Italy.

Alitalia is also required to provide Duty to Care (accommodation, meals and calls) to passengers that are severely delayed or whose flights are canceled. The airline, however, is not required to pay EC 261/2004 compensation due to delays and cancellations.

Flight Review: Alitalia Business Class A330-200 [AZ602 FCO-JFK]

Alitalia is an airline I tend to overlook. I am a Star Alliance guy that occasionally flirts with One World. SkyTeam is my last resort, being their triumvirate AF/KL/DL the ones that have got my (marginal) business in the past. The precarious financial situation the airline has been dragging since their debt refinancing woes in 2016 have not helped me to consider the carrier as a viable alternative for my travel.

Image: https://www.flickr.com/photos/airlines470/26147986271

But then there was this absurd mistake fare that I could score and Alitalia ended up honoring (and also not running out of cash in between!). And I could not be more pleasantly surprised after my experience onboard one of their A330-200 from Rome to New York.

The Cabin and the Seat

On the A330-200 Alitalia offers 20 flat bed seats on their Magnifica business class cabin, Seats are arranged in an all-aisle access 1-2-1 configuration. According to Seatguru, these seats come with a 44″ pitch x 21″ width.

Alitalia refreshed their business class cabin after Etihad rescued the airline in 2014. The new cabin features a bold choice of colors: black and yellow leather seats with red leather safety belts.

The seat disposition makes the window seats on rows 2 and 4 extra private, as the side table is located towards the aisle. At boarding there was a lumbar pillow (red as the safety belt) on each seat and a pillow and blanket set on the foot rest.

Something I consider a must: there were individual air nozzles on the overhead panel, but only on the lateral seats. The central seats had no overhead compartments, which gave the cabin a roomy sensation.

There is storage space under the foot rest. Besides, there’s a pouch with enough space for the amenity kit and a bottle of water. The seat also featured a 110V power plug, a USB port and a LAN port (WTF?).

In-Flight Entertainment

Each seat featured a 17″ touch screen and a handheld remote control. Entertainment content included a wide selection of movies, TV shows, sports, news, and music. Non-branded headphones were provided from the moment of boarding. I ended up watching a few episodes of “The Man in the High Castle” (highly recommended, by the way).

In terms of connectivity, a 50 MB data voucher was offered to business class passengers.

The Amenity Kit

Alitalia’s amenity kit features Salvatore Ferragamo products in a soft pouch. The contents included a sleep mask and socks, colgate toothpaste + toothbrush, a sugar and gluten free mint, moisturizing lotion, lip balm, a cleansing towel and eau de toilette.

The Menus

Food Menu

Beverages Menu

The Food & Beverages Service

Service started with a pre-departure drink, a choice of prosecco, orange juice or water.

An aperitif was served right after departure, and I HAD to try the Aperol Spritz! It was delicious, served with some warm nuts.

I chose the duck breast for starters. The presentation was flawless and the taste was even better than it looked.

Then the guinea fowl breast as my main course:

And their take on a pastiera napoletana for dessert, paired with their Oirad sweet white wine:

Conclusion

Alitalia was a much pleasant surprise. The food was beautifully presented and the taste was delicious, the wine selection was fantastic and the service was flawless. The Aperol Spritz for aperitif can not be more Italian! I missed the snack service before landing because I slept through it. The seat was super comfortable and I slept all the way until cabin preparation before landing. Too bad as I wanted to try the Italian board.

My overall opinion: I would fly them again.

“New” Alitalia Formed On July 15, 2019?

$
0
0

Alitalia has been in bankruptcy now for two years and may see another “reset” next week when, according to Italian media sources, the local railway operator and Italian government will take a 50% stake in the newly formed company (and the bad debt is left to the tax payers).

Alitalia Running Out Of Cash

The rest of the company would go to other Italian entities and Delta Air Lines may chip in for a small stake. This is now an “umpteenth” time the airline is being rescued with tax payers’ help.

Here’s an excerpt from L’Economia (access their piece here):

The government tries to close the game on Alitalia. The scheme is a veiled nationalization of the former flag company, focusing on the establishment of a new company where the majority of the capital will be in public hands. In practice, the process of re-launching the carrier, currently in the commissioning procedure, will have to be Ferrovie dello Stato, with a 35% stake, and the Ministry of Economy, through a 15% stake.

The certainty of the commitment of Delta Airlines , which will subscribe a 10% stake, is offset by the uncertainty on the other shareholders who receive the remaining 40% of shares. A missing quota worth at least 300 million euros in terms of recapitalization.

Conclusion

Italian government or government owned entities controlling more than half of the company does not bode well for its future success. Why would Italian railways take 35% stake in the “new” Alitalia unless forced by the government?

The airline has lost billions since early 2000’s and this is fifth or sixth restart since the 1999. Sometimes it would be wise for allowing failing business to simply collapse. Now, Italian tax payers are picking up the tab yet again.

When are we going to see the next restart? In two years time?

Alitalia Nationalized With The Help Of Delta And Atlantia

$
0
0

There have been more news coming from Italy regarding Alitalia that has been in bankruptcy for the past two years and lost billions after billions over the last twenty or so years (has this airline ever turned a profit?).

Alitalia Running Out Of Cash

The airline is essentially nationalized. The government of Italy and railway operator (100% owned by the government) being the majority shareholders while Delta and Atlantia (highway and airport operator in Italy) will own part of the new company.

The old Alitalia (this is yet another restart) will be left more than three billion in debt that is covered mostly by the tax payers and unsecured creditors. The management (or the government) is already promising employees that there won’t be job cuts.

Here’s an excerpt from AINonline (access their piece here):

Following months of delay and persistent changes to various deadlines—including the deadline to repay a government-backed €900 million bridge loan—the re-launch of Alitalia appears within reach as a second private investor group has won the right to participate in the rescue operation of Italy’s perennially loss-making national airline.

“Yesterday we received four expressions of interest regarding a possible participation in Alitalia,” a spokesman for state-owned railway operator Ferrovie dello Stato Italiano (FS), which leads efforts to find new shareholders and devise a business plan for the “New Alitalia,” told AIN. The board of directors considered the four proposals at its meeting on Monday, he said.

In a statement released Monday evening, FS said the board had identified Italian motorway and airport infrastructure group Atlantia as a partner alongside Delta Air Lines and the ministry of economy and finance on the Alitalia rescue operation. It will start working with the chosen partners “as soon as possible” to share the business plan and the other elements of the possible binding offer.

Conclusion

This essentially means that the Italian tax payers are subsidizing the highly unprofitable airline yet again. This is not the first, the second or even the third restart of the airline.

You would think that at some point someone in Italy would come to a conclusion that throwing more money into this unprofitable exercise is lose-lose proposition?

The Atlantia was likely forced to become a partner due to “owning” government a favor after the bridge collapse in Italy. Not exactly sure what Delta sees here? I guess that they are willing to lose some cash keeping Alitalia live couple of more years and keep competitors at bay.

I’ll see another rescue in two to three years time….
